Mendlesham contains a conservation area and a number of listed structures
including the Grade I listed Church of St Mary and large number of Grade II
buildings. More peripherally lie the Grade II* listed Elms Farmhouse and the Grade II listed Friary Cottage and Calves Pightle. A number of relatively large sites are being considered for allocation around the edge of Mendlesham, it is therefore crucial to consider the cumulative impacts of such development. The presence of these heritage assets and their settings should be considered carefully as part of the site allocation process.

Mendlesham Airfield
The sites being considered for allocation conjoin to create a large continuous area
over a disused airfield site. A number of listed buildings including the Grade II* listed Red Hall and the Grade II listed Mickfield Hall, Moat House, and Bloomfields
Farmhouse lie to the north and east of the proposed allocations. The presence of
these heritage assets and their settings should be considered carefully as part of the
site allocation process.

Mendlesham Green Settlement Boundary:
needs removal of playingfield to outside the settlement boundary and we propose another area of settlement at Mendlesham Green (include the site of current Scout Hut - recently demolished). See separate report.

New development must be carefully phased over the coming years to avoid the local
area being congested with new homes construction placing undue pressure on the
support and transport services.

Given the Draft Joint Local Plan covers the period 2017 to 2036 the Parish Council
wants further significant new development, after Old Engine Meadow, scheduled for
2022 and beyond. There is also support for up to ten affordable dwellings at
Mendlesham Green which could be delivered in the next 5 years. All of which clearly demonstrates the willingness of the Parish Council and local
residents to support carefully planned and phased small developments.

Sites SS0063, SS0065 and SS0083 - these sites represent blocks of land which are likely to contain species and/or habitats of nature conservation interest. Further assessment is therefore required to determine whether development in this location is likely to result in any adverse ecological impacts.
